It is a Traditional Carnival that takes place on 6-7 January 8th. This is a three-day event of carnival in which the city acquires a distinct color and festive atmosphere.
The Ragoutsara begin on the Epiphany Day (January 6) and end on January 8 (Paterica), the day of Saint Dominic, with the Carnival Parade.
The name and origin of this custom are found in classical antiquity, from which through Rome (Saturnalia = festivals in honor of Saturn) and Byzantium was transposed nowadays. It is very likely that the name comes from the Latin rogatores = beggars, who very aptly defines the status of the participant in the disguised group. There is the habit of disguised men asking for various gifts from homemakers visiting in return for their contribution to the removal of evil spirit.
So even the name leads us to identify the custom in antiquity. In Ragoutsaria they take part in "bouloukia", each with its own traditional bronze orchestra, all Kastorians, men and women, young and old, and with them thousands of visitors, who have been laughing for three days with a thousand words of disguise on the streets of the city within a real panzurlism.
